On April 21, 2014, the HEI-contracted Pakistan Guddu 747-MW Combined Cycle Power Project held its grand inauguration ceremony in Sindh province, Southern Pakistan. Major figures including Mr. Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Mr. Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Federal Minister for Water and Power, Mr. Pervaiz Rashid, Federal Minister of Information & Broadcasting, and Mr. Wang Shimin, Vice President of HEI, attended the inauguration ceremony.
Prime Minister Sharif spoke at the ceremony, firstly expressing gratitude to the Chinese Government for its support as well as to HEI for all the tremendous effort it contributed to the success of the project. Mr. Sharif noted that the project was completed seven months ahead of schedule, saving a considerable amount of money for the Pakistani government. He also emphasized that Pakistan is proud of its friendship with China and hopes both countries develop further cooperation in energy and power generation in the future.
In his speech, Mr. Wang Shimin, Vice President of HEI, stated that power is crucial to Pakistan’s development. The completion and employment of the Guddu Power Plant significantly boosts the country’s economic development. HEI has received support and appreciation from diverse circles within Pakistan for the construction of the project, representing the deep level of friendship between China and Pakistan.
The Guddu Combined Cycle Project is located in Sindh province, Southern Pakistan, and deploys two sets of Frame-9FA class gas turbines from GE, 2 sets of HRSGs, and 1 set of steam turbine units from China, boasting a total installation of 747 MW. It is the largest combined cycle power plant in capacity as well as the largest EPC contract project undertaken by Chinese contractors in Pakistan. It is also the first 9FA-class combined cycle power plant contracted abroad by a Chinese company using EPC.
Pakistan is known to be faced with severe power shortages, with its power deficit reaching 5000 MW at times. The completion and employment of the Guddu Combined Cycle Power Project will effectively relieve the power deficit in Pakistan. It is of great significance to the development of Pakistani power, and a great boon to the development of the local economy and society as well as the China-Pakistan economic corridor.
