On August 6 and 13 local time, the Nairyah 2 and Rumah 2 combined-cycle power plant projects in Saudi Arabia, both undertaken by Harbin Electric International Engineering Co., Ltd. (HEI), successfully completed the precision positioning of their respective No. 1 gas turbine generator step-up transformers. This marks a key breakthrough in the installation of core electrical equipment at both projects and lays a solid foundation for subsequent electrical system construction, equipment commissioning, and the on-schedule commissioning of the generating units.

Each No. 1 gas turbine generator step-up transformer positioned during the operations weighs 280 tonnes and is a critical piece of oversized and overweight equipment for the projects. Faced with multiple challenges—including Saudi Arabia’s high temperatures, the complex logistics involved in transporting heavy equipment, and stringent positioning accuracy requirements—the two project teams planned well in advance and made meticulous arrangements. They coordinated technical, safety, construction, logistics, and other specialists to conduct comprehensive reviews and technical assessments of the dedicated construction plans.

The teams repeatedly surveyed the transportation routes, reinforced and hardened the roads, rechecked and verified the equipment foundations, and comprehensively inspected all positioning conditions. Based on these preparations, they formulated tailored plans for transporting and positioning the oversized equipment. They also carried out safety and technical briefings and systematically identified and mitigated risks associated with transportation, jacking, skidding, and final placement. These measures ensured that the transformers were transported and positioned safely and steadily, achieving precise placement.

As the core hub for stepping up and transmitting electricity generated by the gas turbine units, the successful positioning of the main transformers has created favorable conditions for subsequent electrical installation, testing, and commissioning.

Going forward, the HEI project teams will remain focused on key annual construction milestones, reinforce accountability, and optimize construction processes. They will steadily advance follow-up work, including the installation of transformer accessories, electrical cable and pipeline connections, and associated system testing. These efforts will move electrical construction progressively into the system installation, testing, and commissioning stages, while fully supporting the timely and high-quality commissioning of the generating units at the Nairyah 2 and Rumah 2 power plant projects.
